There are a few times every year that I hear of a good music review and check out an album and become entranced. Michael Kiwanuka has done that to me with his album Love & Hate. Only $5 to download, or enjoy on a streaming service you use. Here's the song I can't stop playing, "Cold Little Heart." The opening is 6 1/2 minutes long and then it gets into the song and I never want the opening to end, and then it does, and I'm so glad because it's this whole other thing. What an epic this is. Hope you enjoy it.

Music Monday 3.18.13
Here are albums streaming free this week that I think are worth checking out...
- Julian Lynch: Lines | I'm listening to this now, and it's fascinating. Electric folk Americana something. I hear Sufjan influence. Really digging it.
- Wavves: Afraid of Heights
- DJ Koze: Amygdala
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Specter at the Feast
- Low: The Invisible Way (out tomorrow, I will be buying it)
Josh Garrels is still giving away 5 albums FREE.
Jonathan Meiburg of Shearwater covers Roy Orbison's "It's Over" in the Texas outdoors. If you don't know Jonathan's work (with Okkervil River too), you should check it out. I still think Palo Santo is his best work. Covering Orbison is hard work, but well done by JM.

The Lone Bellow on Conan
What have I been telling you? The Lone Bellow is THIS good. Watch them play Conan, then get The Lone Bellow for only $5.99.
The Lone Bellow | "You Never Need Nobody"
I not only need you to watch this live version of "You Never Need Nobody" from The Lone Bellow, but I also need you to promise not to give up on it (if it's not your favorite genre of music, for example). Around 2 1/2 minutes in it gets amazing. This is impressive. And at 3:20 I vowed to buy The Lone Bellow's self-titled album, which is officially out on Tuesday. I'll be sure to remind you Tuesday. (It's on iTunes now if you can't wait.)
UPDATE: More videos -- don't miss these. Amazing. Beautiful.
Yo La Tengo on Fallon
Yo La Tengo was on Fallon last night. I posted about their new album, Fade, yesterday because it's excellent and only $5. They had two performances from the show: the first on the live show and the second after the show. Notice the drummer on the right in the first video from the live show. Pretty cool. I think that drum kit was used on Pet Sounds.
Jack White | Austin City Limits
Here's one of the great rock stars of our time playing a full set of his music live, including songs from my #4 album of 2012. He's better live than on recording, and that's saying something. Here are songs from Jack White's solo album, Blunderbuss, as well as songs from White Stripes, Raconteurs, & Dead Weather. UPDATE: I can't seem to get the full set to embed, so here's the 20 minute preview which is also great. See full video here.
Watch Jack White on PBS. See more from Austin City Limits.
Tiny Desk Concert | Anais Mitchell
One of the great albums of 2012 comes from Anais Mitchell, Young Man In America. It will be high on my Best Albums of 2012 list. She just played a Tiny Desk Concert. This is an artist who is great at her craft. Enjoy!
Sojourn Live | Come Ye Sinners
Our friends at Sojourn Community Church in Louisville, KY who have put out some of the great, new, creative worship music of the last several years now have released Come Ye Sinners, a live album. Along with that, you can get all other Sojourn albums for $5. So it's a good time to fill in what's missing in your Sojourn Music catalog as well as to pick up their new offering.
Andrew Bird | New Album & Letterman
Andrew Bird's new album is out, Hands of Glory. It's only $5.99. He appeared on Letterman last night (sans audience) to play "If I Needed You"...
Mumford & Sons on Jools
Mumford & Sons have made the kind of record they are supposed to make...emotive, heart-on-sleeve, compelling, rollicking, and just plain fun. I've been considering writing a post about why you shouldn't feel guilty for listening to Mumford & Sons (Some indie sites are ripping them, and acting like you are an idiot if you like them). I say you should pick up Babel (or deluxe edition) and tap your feet and clap your hands, or as Jon McIntosh put it in a recent tweet...
I just know that no other music makes me want to tear off my shirt and run down the street with my hands lifted to the sky. #Mumford #Babel
— Jonathan McIntosh (@JonMcIntosh) October 7, 2012
Leave your shirt on Jon, but I hear you! :) Below are three live performances on Jools: "I Will Wait" | "Whispers In The Dark" | "Below My Feet."

Pick up Brandi Carlile's EP, Live At Bear Creek, for free below. Her album, Bear Creek, is out now and I'm loving it. Strongly encourage you to pick up her new stuff, as well as her previous albums which are some of our very favorites to play in our house: Brandi Carlile | The Story | Give Up The Ghost | Live At Benaroya Hall.
Music Monday | The Dø: "Gonna Be Sick!"
The Dø (pronounced "dough") has one of my favorite new albums, Both Ways Open Jaws. Catchy songs. Creative. One of my favorites is "Gonna Be Sick!" An excellent quality live version is up. It (purposefully) starts slow, so stay with it.
Once Soundtrack | $3.99
Once Soundtrack might be the best soundtrack ever, and it's $3.99 today only. Glen Hansard (of The Frames) & Markéta Irglová star in the movie and create the music. If you need convincing, here are two of my favorite songs, "Leave" (live, Hansard) and "Lies" (via the Soundtrack, from both artists). Consider yourself convinced.

The National with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver
The National and guest, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver singing "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks." Song is off The National's outstanding 2010 album, High Violet.
M83 On Fallon With "Midnight City"
M83 has one of my favorite albums of the year, Hurry Up We're Dreaming. Actually it's a double album. My iPod asks me for a little diversity and I'm reluctant, because I love this album and I love it loud. I think you will too.
If you aren't convinced, please watch them play Fallon with their great song "Midnight City." Turn up the volume. The lyrics are below the video if you want to follow along. Lyric of note, "The city is my church." What does this song teach us about the culture?
"Midnight City" Lyrics
Waiting in the car
Waiting for a ride
At night the city grows
Look at the horizon glowWaiting in the car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
Drinking in the lights
Following the neon signsWaiting for a word
Looking at the milky skyline
The city is my church
It wraps me in its blinding twilightWaiting in the car
Waiting for a ride in the dark
The Civil Wars Cover "Billie Jean"
Who'da thunk it? "Billie Jean" is not on Barton Hollow, but it is on Jools...
Beirut | "Santa Fe" on Fallon
Watch Beirut play "Santa Fe" on Fallon and then go buy The Rip Tide. It's great. By the way, their excellent 2006 album is only $5.49 | Gulag Orkestar. Can't recommend that one any higher.
Delta Spirit | "Bushwick Blues" at Lollapalooza
Delta Spirit is one of my favorite live bands. Here's why. Check out "Bushwick Blues" live at Lollapalooza last month. Oh, the ending is so much fun. Get "Bushwick Blues" on their recent & fantastic album, History From Below. Also check out Ode To Sunshine.
